Every DSP function is a set of multipliers, adders and delay units. They are the bases of the algorithms both in DSP processors and in FPGAs. The advantage of FPGAs lies within the parallel processing. Parallelism saves time and thus increases the systems computational abilities.

 

Xilinx has two sets of devices for the DSP application. For cost sensitive solutions, the Spartan-3A DSP family is the ideal solution with the DSP48A block. For high performance DSP applications, the Virtex-5 SXT and the new Virtex-6 SXT supply high performance processing with the DSP48E/DSP48E1 blocks. This range of devices provides solutions for different market segments.

The XtremeDSP block contains a 18x25bit multiplier, followed by an adder/subtracter of 48bits. This adder can also create logic operations using a dynamic ALU mode. The DSP block contains registers to allow pipelining. Among the advantages of Xilinx solution is the cascading logic. The DSP block architecture conatains Carry between the blocks for implementation of complicated filters at full rate.
